Q1. Is Costco offering the Internship Program?
A) Costco has its own student program called “Student retention program” and “Student regular program.” These programs are offered to vocational school students, two-year college students and also four-year university students. For more information click here
Q2. Is Costco hiring new graduates?
A) Yes. Costco hires new graduates every year. Please participate in our student program and get a real feel for Costco.
Q3. Is English required to work for Costco? Is any qualification required?
A) There is no special qualification required. It will be better if you have English skills.  Business level English skills are required for management positions.   (Business level Japanese including reading and writing is required for non-Japanese nationals. ) We use English in the internal email correspondences.
Q4. Generally speaking, foreign companies are known to layoff employee for the purposes of reorganization. Does this apply to Costco?
A) Since we came to Japan in 1998, Costco Japan has never dismissed any employees for the purposes of reorganization. Our focus is to provide a safe working environment for all employees so that they can stay for a long time and develop their careers. We offer a family atmosphere in which our employees thrive and succeed.
Q5. What is the percentage of the female employees who return to work after taking maternity and child care leave?
A) It is over 95%. Costco promotes a female friendly workplace.
Q6. Please let me know about how to prepare for a reference.
A) References are required only for the management positions. Except for the management positions, references are not required.
Q7. If I didn’t pass the initial screening or the interview, can I get my resume back?
A) Sorry, we are unable to do so.
Q8. Is there an international transfer program to foreign countries/regions?
A) Costco is a global company which operates warehouses in nine countries/regions. Currently, there is no official international transfer program. In the future, there would be a possibility to implement the program to our international partners.
Q9. Is there any age limit?
A) There is no age limit. We select candidates based on their work history, experience and potential.
Q10. What is the percentage of an annual paid vacation leave?
A) All Costco employees who are employed continuously for six months, and have worked at least 80% of the total scheduled working days, are entitled to receive paid annual vacation leave. As a company, 90% of vacation days are taken.
Q11. How do I get paid salary each month? Is the pay system annual salary or monthly salary?
A) Management positions are paid based on annual salary and it is paid on the 10th of every month and the amount which was divided into 12 months will be paid monthly. Full time positions are paid based on hourly wages and it is paid on the 10th day of every month. In this way, working hours are managed by system automatically and it allows us to pay for the overtime precisely.
Q12. Is there any retirement plan?
A) We provide our employees a defined contribution pension plan (called Japanese 401K).
Q13. What is the defined contribution pension plan?
A) A defined contribution (so called Japanese 401k) pension plan is a pension plan which was introduced in 2001 based upon the 401k system in the US. As a corporate pension plan, we employ a defined contribution (so called Japanese 401k) pension plan and SBI Benefit Systems Co., Ltd. does administration and recordkeeping and Mizuho Trust & Banking Co., Ltd. operates asset management. The current problem of the “AIJ” fraud case has occurred in connection with defined benefit corporate pension plans which are a different type and AIJ managed the fund as an investment advisor. Our pension system is different and there is no relationship between our defined contribution pension plan and the AIJ problem.
